Oscar

Meet “Oscar”...

The first pet to benefit from the Honey Ferlin Foundation.  Oscar is a ten year old male Collie that was presented to Great Lakes Veterinary Specialists as an emergency on September 10, 2008.   That morning the owner noticed that Oscar’s stomach was distended and he was trying to vomit.  Oscar’s stomach was twisted and full of gas, a life threatening surgical emergency known at Gastric Dilitation and Voluvus (GDV or Bloat).  Unfortunately, Oscar’s owner knew these signs too well, as she had lost more than one dog to this life threatening disease before.

Oscar was immediately brought back for “shock” treatment with intravenous fluids, and his stomach distension was lessened via needle placement.   As Oscar started to feel better, it was clear that he was a very affectionate dog, as he tried to communicate with his doctors and technicians.  Oscar’s mom wanted very much to save his life, but could not proceed with the surgery that was necessary to save his life.  She had limited funds, and was willing to give all she had to help her loving companion.  She just had no other resources.

The Honey Ferlin Foundation was able to largely support Oscar’s surgery and save his life.  Oscar’s stomach was twisted and a portion also had to  be removed.  He had surgery that morning and has made a wonderful recovery.   His life was spared because of the existence and generosity of the Honey Ferlin Foundation.  It is nothing short of wonderful that other pets are helped tremendously in Honey’s memory.
